The member of the Presidential Council Ahmed Mitig said Italy doesn't know what it wants in Libya
due to its lack of political strategy, which is making it lose Libya as a partner in the Mediterranean,
which is difficult to win back in the future.
In an interview with Le Republica, Mitig said Italy had taken wrong steps over the last two years despite
being the closes European country to Libya since 2011 and even before.
Mitig said that when his government was in dire need for assistance during the war on Tripoli,
other governments approached them and helped them, adding that the issue is not about weapons.
"There was no political support from Italy at the time Tripoli war broke.
In November 2019, Haftar's offensive nearly collapsed Tripoli and at that time, Italian political leaders started
discussions with Haftar."
He added.
Mitig met last Sunday with the Italian ambassador Giuseppe Buccino ans said EU's Operation IRINI wasn't sufficient
for Libya as it looked away from land and western border sources of weapons delivery to Haftar.
Vice President of the Presidential Council (PC), Ahmed Maiteeq, said that the IRINE Naval Operation, set up to
monitor the arms embargo on Libya, is insufficient and fails to observe air control and eastern land borders,
which according to international reports, are being used to supply arms to Haftar’s forces.
Maiteeq added, during his meeting with the Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Buccino in Tripoli, that the
European Union (EU), did not consult the Government of National Accord (GNA), before making its decision.
For his part, Buccino indicated that his country would work with Germany and some other EU
countries on achieving balance to ensure impartial implementation of the Operation.
